REVISION:

After talking to the resort, we are no longer offering practice rounds with the 4- or 5-night stays. The price for the 3-night/2-day stay is the same, $575. The 4-night stay with 2 tournament rounds is now $635, and the 5-night stay with 2 tournament rounds is $695. Participants will now have to pay ala carte for their own practice rounds. The cost on Saturday and Sunday, October 16-17, is $90 before noon and $50 after noon. All packages include the opening welcome party with cash bar, and the closing banquet and awards ceremony.

Those who already signed up and paid for the the 4- or 5-night packages will be refunded the golf portion of their entry fees and are now responsible for paying for their practice rounds.

Great news and a great venue, although Hilton Head was a very nice place, I enjoy the Desert, and look forward to participating in 2010.

VEGAS AREA TO HOST 15TH ANNUAL UNITED STATES GOLF TEACHERS CUP

The Primm Valley Resort, host to two Tom Fazio-designed world class golf courses, is the host for the 15th annual United States Golf Teachers Cup to be held Monday-Tuesday, October 18-19, 2010. Both the Lakes and the Desert courses will be used for the championship.

A full field of 132 players will play the Desert course the first day and the Lakes course the second day. Something new in 2010 is that play will be held in threesomes instead of foursomes.

Three packages will be offered: 1) 3-night stay with 2 tournament rounds; 2) 4-night stay with 2 tournament rounds and 1 practice round; 3) 5-night stay with 2 tournament rounds and 2 practice rounds. Entry fees have yet to be determined.

Do you know where and when the World Cup will be held in 2010?

There is no World Cup in 2010 as it's a biennial event. As of now, Europe is working on hosting the 2011 version probably in January or February of that year in either Spain or Portugal.

Hi Mark,
Pulling up Primm Valley Resort on Google. it shows several locations. What are the exact street address for the golf courses please? I haven't played the last two years but look forward to this event as it is an easy drive for me. Thanks in advance for your good planning.

The courses are actually just across the border in California and are about a 10-minute drive from the resort. Primm has three hotels, Whiskey Pete's, Buffalo Bill's, and Terrible's Primm Valley. Most of us will be staying at Primm Valley although some will be at Buffalo Bill's.

Mark,
I have never participated in the Teachers Cup, and am seriously considering this one. Couple of questions come to mind. I know where Primm is and see the hotels from the freeway. What is included in the "package" price? I assume lodging and golf. How does one know which hotel to stay in and what are the options? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

They are allowed, provided all they do is measure actual distance.

As long as they do not have the capability to measure slope.

Mark,
Please define actual distance and give an example or two.
Bill,
Please elaborate on your comment.
I think I do, but I would really like to understand. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Not all rangefinders are OK. In a clarification “under the Rules of Golf, golfers must not use distance-measuring devices for handicap purposes or in competition that are capable of gauging or measuring other conditions that might affect play, even if such a function is not used.”

Such a function might entail measuring wind speed and direction, or the slope of terrain.

When asked why devices with other capabilities that could be turned off were being banned, USGA senior technical director Dick Rugge said, “Distance information is available to players in many forms. .. [including] elaborate yardage books containing distances not only to the putting green but to key features of the hole. .. [therefore] distance is such a ‘known quantity.’ Although an exception has been made for devices capable of measuring distance only, the capability of measuring other conditions which might affect play, as in elevation change or wind speed, is not in keeping with the intent of the authorized Local Rule’ therefore, devices with such capability are not permitted.”
